Ukraine will increase gas imports by 30% due to Russian strikes

Ukraine will need to boost gas imports by about 30% compared to earlier plans due to large-scale Russian strikes on its gas production, Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said, according to Liga.net.

Hrynchuk noted that Ukraine has secured $500 million in loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and $300 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB), both guaranteed by the European Commission, to cover gas purchases. Discussions are also underway with G7 ambassadors on extending these loans and exploring additional grant-based funding.

“The total amount of funding for gas imports will depend on the scale of Russian attacks, the level of damage to the gas system and production facilities, and the speed of recovery,” Hrynchuk said. She emphasized that Ukraine is coordinating individually with each partner to determine how they can best assist with gas procurement.

National power company reports of Ukraine new attacks on energy infrastructure

Russia launched new strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Oct. 7, leaving consumers in Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk oblasts without power, Ukrenergo reported.

The situation in Sumy Oblast remains difficult. In Chernihiv Oblast, local energy providers have introduced hourly outages, rotating through consumer “queues” depending on the scale of the power deficit. Emergency repairs are underway but are being hampered by repeated air-raid alerts.
