Russian drones strike Kyiv hospital and injured 5 civilians across the city

Russian drones struck Kyiv repeatedly on October 20, damaging two medical facilities and injuring five people, according to local authorities. One drone hit the operating room on the sixth floor of the Strazheska Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, injuring a patient. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said the institute had been struck previously, with last year's attack hitting its fourth floor. In the Holosiivskyi district, another medical facility was damaged by falling drone debris. Debris also fell on railway tracks in the Solomyanskyi district and a market in the Obolonskyi district, while a large fire broke out near the Northern Bridge in the Desnianskyi district. Officials said the bridge itself was not hit, although traffic could be disrupted during inspections.

Later in the day, Russian forces struck an energy facility in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, prompting an emergency response. The attacks followed an earlier drone strike on morning commuter traffic in one of the downtown districts, which killed at least three people and injured four, according to the report. The drone crashed near a gas station close to the administrative border with Kyiv Oblast, setting several cars on fire. Ukrainian officials condemned the attacks on civilians and medical infrastructure as emergency crews continued assessing the damage.
Zelensky meets U.S. envoy Witkoff in Norway as ties with Washington sour; Witkoff to continue to St. Petersburg
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Oslo on October 20 amid growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb also took part in the talks, which Zelensky had requested as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts at a critical moment for Ukraine.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of deteriorating U.S.-Ukraine relations. Kyiv has accused Washington of using military assistance and access to technology to pressure it into stopping strikes on Russian oil refineries. Concerns have also grown that the United States may be delaying the delivery of Patriot air-defense missiles funded by Ukraine’s allies and limiting intelligence sharing about Russian missile attacks.
Zelensky held a bilateral meeting with Witkoff, a trilateral session with Støre and Stubb, and broader joint talks that included European representatives. Jared Kushner joined the discussions remotely. After the meetings, Støre announced that Witkoff would travel to St. Petersburg on October 21 to present European and U.S. peace proposals to Russian officials. The visit could potentially pave the way for a leaders-level meeting.
Zelensky said Ukraine and its European partners have developed clear ideas on how to achieve peace and want the Americans to convey them to Moscow. One key proposal involves moving toward a trilateral leaders’ meeting. He also noted that discussions covered strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, joint production, and post-war security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5.
Finnish President Stubb described the talks as productive on the technical level despite public tensions, saying key elements on security and economic issues had been identified. The Oslo discussions took place as Russia continues to escalate attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and as public exchanges between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump have grown increasingly sharp.
Russian drone strike on park in Kharkiv Oblast killed six, including two children

A Russian drone struck a central park in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv Oblast, on the afternoon of October 19, killing six people, including two children, and injuring 15 others, among them seven children. The attack occurred around 16:30 local time when many residents, including families, were in the park.

Among the victims were primary school teacher Inna Mariukhna and her 14-month-old daughter Anhelina, who was killed in her buggy. Mariukhna later died in hospital from her injuries. The second child killed was an 11-year-old girl. Three other women aged 28, 34 and 36, and a man of about 40, also lost their lives. A café building in the park was damaged in the strike.
Local authorities said the drone used was a Geran-3 type. Emergency services and police continue to work at the site, searching for remaining explosives and providing medical assistance to the injured. Prosecutors have opened a war crimes investigation into the attack that resulted in deaths.

Colleagues at Nova Vodolaha School No. 1 described Mariukhna as a wonderful teacher who brought warmth and knowledge to her young pupils. The community has declared October 20 a day of mourning. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, calling the images “horrific” and stressing the urgent need for stronger air defenses.
