Russia is trying to buy time to continue the war, Zelensky after the Putin-Trump phone call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 20 that Russia is using diplomatic talks to buy time and continue its war in Ukraine. The statement followed his conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and came in response to recent phone calls between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is ready for serious negotiations, but only with “clear and realistic proposals.” He warned that if Russia continues to make unrealistic demands and block progress, there must be harsh consequences. He also thanked allies for continued sanctions and emphasized the need for international pressure on Russia to change course.

While the EU and U.K. imposed new sanctions on May 20 targeting Russia's shadow fleet and military networks, Trump stated he would not introduce new U.S. sanctions, citing concerns about disrupting peace talks. This move dampened hopes among European leaders for a unified Western approach.

62% of Americans believe US should continue military support for Ukraine

A new Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll shows that most Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine. According to the survey, 62% of voters back ongoing arms supplies and sanctions against Russia, including 71% of Democrats and 59% of Republicans.

The poll also found that 64% of Americans believe Ukraine should receive direct U.S. security guarantees if it agrees to concessions to end the war. This position is supported by a majority across party lines, signaling broad bipartisan backing for a strong U.S. role in Ukraine's defense.
