Zelensky and Trump discussed the replacement of Ukraine's US ambassador
President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump recently discussed a possible change in Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington, according to a source familiar with the matter. Oksana Markarova, who has held the post since April 2021, played a key role in securing U.S. support during the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The initiative to replace her reportedly came from Kyiv, with officials suggesting a new appointment could be "useful for both sides." Among the leading candidates are Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.
The potential reshuffle comes amid broader speculation about government changes in Kyiv and follows the U.S. Defense Department’s recent pause in deliveries of critical weaponry, including Patriot missiles.
Zelensky characterized his July 5 call with Trump as "the best conversation in all this time," while Trump called the discussion "very strategic."
